School History

Whenever Catholic settlements were formed and Catholic life reached any degree of maturity, Catholic schools were set up and a corresponding educational development took place.

St. Paul School was in operation as early as 1834 and classes were conducted in the log Church. The brick Church was completed in 1838. The school continued to use the log building from 1838-1858.

Between 1858 and 1866 a stone schoolhouse was built, containing one large classroom with an adjoining residence quarter for the teacher. This was followed a few years later by a two-story red brick building having
two large classrooms (one on each floor) and a four-room Convent residence at the rear.

As enrollment increased the primary grades continued to be taught in the brick Convent-School building;
the 5th-8th grades in the stone schoolhouse, an arrangement that would continue until the erection of the modern (now existing) school building in 1921.

From 1922-1930 a new public school unit, the New Alsace High School, shared the facilities until the Guilford School attained four year status.

The decades following the close of the high school would witness steady growth for the elementary school,
with the teaching staff reaching four Sisters, one lay teacher for 1961-1973.

On March 4, 1973, St. Paul School officially became a Parochial School.

In September 1977, St. Paul School Kindergarten opened its doors to children from New Alsace and Yorkville
in the now existing brick school. The organizer was Sister M. Clarissa Dillhoff who remained the Kindergarten teacher until her retirement.

In August 1990, due to the need for space and privacy, the Kindergarten was moved to the bottom floor of the Rectory building. The building was remodeled to meet the needs of the Kindergarten.

In the summer of 1999, Grades 5, 6, & 7 were moved to the Rectory building and Kindergarten/Pre-School were moved to the Convent. This was done to allow for growth of 7th & 8th grade. Due to the lack of interest in the 7th grade, this was dropped for the 2000/2001 school year. Over the next serval years classes moved around campus according to need.

At present, the Rectory is used for the library, art and music and morning 3rd grade. To date, the school
has an enrollment of 60 students ranging from grades Pre-School through 5th grade. The children are from
St. Paul's Parish and St. Martin's, Yorkville; as well as from St. John's, Dover; St. Joseph, St. Leon, St. Theresa Benedicata, Bright.
